Traits & Emotions (Arthur Kurzweil)
We all have traits, emotions, and characteristics that are personal to us. Everyone we ever met also has specific traits that make them unique.
This routine begins with having your friend think of any person that they know something about. It could be a friend, a relative, an acquaintance or someone famous.
You then show them ten cards which have a list of 100 different human traits and emotions. You have them look over the 100 emotions and traits and find the one that most reminds them of the person they are thinking of.
They then take the card with that trait and put it on your palm, followed with all the other cards, which are mixed by you and by them. You then flip the cards over and have them look for the trait or emotion they are thinking of. Once again, they hand the card to you followed by all the others and they are all shuffled.
At this point you already know the word they are thinking of, and you can reveal it anyway you like.

Wow! Traits and Emotions is wonderful effect. The cards are nicely made, and the instructions are clear and comprehensive. The mechanics of the routine are super simple but nicely hidden so the performer can concentrate on the presentation and not have to worry about some fancy manipulation skills. I know I should get a wonderful reaction from my nonmagician audiences. Remember presentation is everything in this kind of routine.
This is a streamlined method that involves human characteristics - far stronger than, say, calling out a two-digit number.

In this effect the spectator thinks of a character trait of someone they know, and the performer correctly identifies that trait. As with all mentalism it comes down to the manner in which the selection is made and the procedure that follows the selection.
Here, you are provided with 10 high-quality laminated 4.5” by 5.5” cards with 10 words printed on each side; a hundred different traits. The spectator lays the card that contains the noted trait in your hand, then mixes it up along with the other cards. After doing this procedure one additional time, the performer can state the trait with100 percent accuracy. This is a self-working method that requires zero fishing and the character traits cover a wide spectrum. This is not the typical binary sorting procedure style of effect that you may be familiar with. This is a streamlined method that involves human characteristics— far stronger than, say, calling out a two-digit number.
Considerations: Some acting is involved. Mr. Kurzweil suggests sensing “feelings” rather than simply calling out the selected word, to avoid making the routine seem like a puzzle.
