Dr. Michael Rubinstein is considered one of the best coin magicians and creators in the business. This video was recorded in Pennsylvania in 2004 during a live lecture where he performed and explained some of his best routines.
The video begins with a short act followed by a full explanation of the routines and techniques. The show featured: Triple Play, Crazy Coins Across (not explained, see 1986 video), Stand Up Coins Through The Table, Silver Lint 4, and Stand-Up Sucker Copper-Silver Routine.
The video also serves as course in coin magic that will inspire you to learn Michael’s many techniques that you will likely incorporate into your performances.
The lecture segment begins with and explanation to Michael’s Matting techniques which he used to fool most of the people in attendance every time coins completely vanished, allowing him to show his hands completely empty each time. He did it five times during the show and fooled people, and will fool you, every time. Also taught during this segment is the Variation Retention Pass, and Semi Back Palm.
Routines and techniques performed and explained:
►Stand-Up Sucker Copper-Silver Routine: A guessing game using a copper coin and a silver coin where they keep changing places, traveling across and as a surprise finale they completely vanish. This is a streamlined version of the routine that Michael won a creativity award with at the MAES Convention.
Techniques explained: R.O.P.S. Click Pass.
►Triple Play: You reach into the air to grab a piece of dust which you change into a coin, you do this, two more times, producing more coins and making wishes. The three coins then vanish as mysteriously as they appeared and are later found inside a purse that was shown empty at the beginning.
Techniques explained: Fingertip Shuttle Pass, One-Behind Principle, Rubinstein Click Pass, Spellbound Changeover Palm, R.O.P.S. Move, and Modified Spider-Grip Vanish.
►Stand Up Coins Through The Table: A classic of magic, but done standing. Four coins penetrate the center of the table, one at a time, from one hand to the other.
Techniques explained: Rosenthal Subtle Coin Steal, Spread Finger Subtlety, Pick Up Pinch, and Purse Palm.
►Retro Fly: Michael’s take on the Three-Fly routine where three coins held at your fingertips vanish one at a time and arrive in your other hand.
Techniques explained: Fan Separation Shuttle, Substitution Addition Variation, French Pop Curtis Cam Variation, Pocket Ditch, Utility Switch.
►Silver Lint 4: A piece of lint turns into a silver coin which changes into a copper coin, back to silver, it vanishes, it appears and finally turns back into a Chinese coin.
Techniques explained: Fingertip Load, L'homme Masque Load, Spellbound Changeover Palm, Derek Dingle’s Sucker Change, and Wave Change.
►The Chocolate Coin: This is the original Lint Coin routine that Michael created using chocolate coins and M&Ms.
►Merlini Purse Routine: Three copper coins are tossed out of a coin purse. They each turn to gold when rubbed against the magical purse and are tossed back inside. As a finale the coins are tossed back out of the purse and they are seen to have gone back to copper.
Techniques explained: Al Schneider’s Classic Vanish, and Impromptu Touch Change.
